KAMPAR: The Government will not enforce hudud law in Malaysia, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.

The Prime Minister said that although it was accepted in Islam, its implementation must be based on reality.

“Hudud laws cannot be implemented as we have to take into consideration the environment and the reality.

“The aim of an administration according to Islam is based on the maqasid syariah principle, which, among others, entails protecting religion, life, morals and property,” he said after the launch of the Tanjung Tualang 1Malaysia carnival here yesterday.

The Prime Minister said under current laws, the principle and objective of maqasid syariah could be championed.

Najib said there were already elements of hudud in the system “minus the extreme part”.

“This does not mean there are no Islamic laws being practised in Malaysia,” he said.

Najib added that PAS leaders had raised the issue to divert the rakyat’s attention.

PAS is trying to emerge as a party championing hudud law to win the hearts of the Malays, he said, referring to recent events following PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu’s comments calling the men who had attacked the police base in the Bukit Kepong incident as heroes.

Najib also said the failure among Pakatan Rakyat allies to agree on the issue was expected.
